The background story

This project was swiftly crafted for a client entering the competitive AI apps market, seeking to position themselves with a compelling UI to captivate users. It comprises rapid mockups showcasing the key screens of an AI tool, with further enhancements in progress.

I was tasked with creating quick mockups of the main screens for this AI tool, with additional iterations expected soon.

My contribution

My responsibilities included:

  • Conducting a comprehensive analysis of the existing design and implementing necessary improvements to the UI/UX.
  • Analyzing competitor apps on mobile and web.
  • Creating wireframes for the entire app.
  • Designing prototypes for specific sections of the platform.
  • Providing a seamless hand-off to the development team, equipping them with all the essential information needed for effective app creation (icons, color palettes, etc.).

The design process

The process wasn't overly complicated since numerous AI applications are already available in the market. We didn't have an existing app to revamp, so we began fresh, basing our starting point on researching other apps currently in the market.

Competitor Analysis

The first step involved thoroughly exploring the existing market landscape. Were we in direct competition with others? Did we require additional functionalities to differentiate ourselves? How could we make a distinctive mark? What stylistic approaches did they adopt?

Analyzing competitors was crucial to gaining insights into the existing offerings and establishing a starting point.

I achieved this by downloading five different mobile apps and utilizing three web versions. Including web versions allowed me to compare and contrast their features. Since our focus was on a mobile app, I personally tested these competitors to understand user experience (UX) flaws and swiftly address them to gain a competitive edge.

Moreover, I meticulously examined customer reviews of these apps to identify common pain points.

From this research, I gleaned a comprehensive understanding of their shared features:

  1. Each app featured a primary chat interface where users could inquire about their needs, with additional functionalities such as copying responses, editing queries, and rating responses to enhance the algorithm.
  2. An image generation tool was prevalent across these apps, often offering various artistic styles and the option to specify the number of images required.
  3. Topics, serving as a UX trend, were also consistently offered. These included AI-suggested topics to explore the usefulness of the app.

This research was essential to ensure we didn't operate in isolation but rather created a solution that addressed real market demands. Armed with initial client requirements, we were primed to begin.

Subsequently, progress flowed smoothly as the client had already provided screen layouts and their positioning within a tab bar. Utilizing this template, I focused on integrating the fundamental functionalities identified during the research phase.

Trends

A prevalent trend I observed in the AI industry was the use of neon colors and dark interfaces. These elements convey a futuristic feel, aligning with the perception of AI technology. Coupled with contemporary typefaces, rounded corners, and a subtle minimalist approach, these stylistic choices defined the aesthetic for our app.
